    Description

Vintage Peruvian Manta, hand-woven village textile. Black 'pampa' (fields) with narrow bands of symbols in red and white, with subtle blue outlines. Mid to late 20th-C, sheep's wool, or possibly blended with alpaca, 40" x 41" from
    Incahuasi
    in the Cuzco region.
Woven on a back-strap or floor loom in two pieces, then joined.
Each traditional village in the Andean region has its own distinctive women's manta and men's poncho designs.  The patterns  include elements related to village or family tradition, and the colors would be the same, although each weaver would create their own unique variations.
This item was acquired in Ollantaytambo in 2001 and kept in much the same fine nearly new condition as when purchased.  I'm downsizing and selling my personal collection of fine textiles.
