    Description

    Certified Inca Empire Wood Conopa
Item is legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, Chapter 14.
Artifact Info: Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Inca Empire, 1200AD to 1532AD. A rare, well preserved, hand carved wood conopa, in the form of a llama (or camelid/alpaca), with a hollowed-out interior. The effigy figure is carved from a single piece of wood, with llama (or camelid/alpaca) facial features and a tail. The bottom is slightly rounded, but it stands on its own without the need of support.
This artifact is a ritual animal effigy which was often buried to protect the herds. The interior would have been filled with ritual offerings like coca leaves, maize, or animal fat in order to appease the gods. Conopas were made from wood and stone. This artifact is rare as most wood items decompose through time; however, this was nicely preserved through history due to the dry, coastal climate of Peru.
