    Description

    AUTHENTIC LARGE HANDMADE
CLAY PUCARA BULLS PERUVIAN ROOF ORNAMENT!
While in Peru we began noticing a range of mysterious ornaments adorning the tops of houses. Some had obvious religious significance, others were less easy to interpret. While in a small town of Pucara in route to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca that light was finally shed on the conundrum. Pucara is the home to a local history museum and while not particularly well maintained the exhibits are interesting and it turns out, Pucara is the center of production of the Ceramic Bull Roof decorations. Known as Torito de Pucara. The bulls are placed on the roof of the houses, generally 2 are placed, which represent the Andean duality, female and male, male and female, father and mother; since the couple who will live in that house will be prosperous, will be healthy and will always be protected. In the middle a cross is placed on the spiritual side with a staircase that means throughout their lives the couple has to climb one more step each day, in other words, progress will strengthen the bond between them. There is also the rooster that tells us that we must wake up early day by day and work hard for our dreams as a couple, however not everything in this life is effort and work, that is why there is the jug of chichi that means the enjoyment of the couple.
It represents the joys, parties and friendships that you will experience together. they are placed on the roof for good luck, fertility (of crops and livestock) and to bring prosperity. Contains all 8 characteristics (orifice in lower back for water or wine, handle at neck base, saddle, 3 ridges on upper neck, round & protruding eyes, tongue, ornaments and spiral ornaments). They are typically given as presents for extra luck and pretty much every building you see in southern Peru has one of the decorations on the roof. This peculiar character, full of colors and Andean details, is the most representative ceramic of the Pucara culture, which has transcended times, staying alive in the Peruvian culture. The two clay decorated cows on a wooded platform are cemented to the top front part of the home and not always neatly done but obviously seen by all that pass by. Once again, EL “Torito de Pucara”. a symbol of protection, happiness and fertility for the family who lives there before. Certainly, this member of our home has blessed us with all the qualities that Pucara had promised us. The one we selected has two decorated bulls sitting on a wooden platform. In the center is a wooded cross with a wooded ladder going up the center. On the left side of the cross bar of the cross is a tied clay jar or pitcher and on the right side is a tied clay chicken or rooster. Approximate measurements: Height (at tallest point) 15” tall Length 8” X 8” width. The bulls are also tied on and I think the bulls are rather large in size.
I truly don’t know how I got it home without breakage but I did and that’s why it will only be sold by local pickup only.
I would hate for it to arrive at your home in pieces and you never get to be seen in its original creation. Why I wanted it I can’t really say but I love the unique look and it spoke to me so I had to have it.
Unfortunately, my husband wouldn’t get on the roof and cement it on so it’s lived in our living room floor all these years and brought us lots of love and joy. Just noticed they both have a slot to hold coins and booth have an opening I guess to fill and drink the chichi
Photographing our bulls, I found these minor defects but I want you to know about them. A slight rubbed mark or lack of paint on the Bulls ear, same bull has a
paint rubbed mark on his decoration down the front. The bull on the right has some minor scratches on its right foot. They were wrapped in newspaper so there are some markings from that (very minor).
On the back of the right bull I can see some paint rubbed marks on his tail and that is also minor. Just notice a chip on the back of the foot and don’t know if that is original or caused since it came to our house.
All in All these are a treasures and hope it makes it to your roof for good health, luck & prosperity!
