  • Condition: While this was obviously a well-used medical accessory, the overall condition is still good. There are a number of very small dings especially in the black trim of both the box and lid. There are a few light scratches, and scuffing on the bottom of the box. The box interior has a dry, yellowish residue that's very likely to wash off with a mild abrasive and a good scrub, though that is up to the new owner. Three of the four interior corners have a small amount of rust, and a couple dings on the edge of the box do as well--they are all what I would consider minor. If you enlarge the photos you should be able to see these spots, but if you would like additional photos, please reach out.

    Description

Vintage 33" Long Enamel Medical Tray with Original Lid
In mid-century America, porcelain enamel boxes like this one were a common sight in doctor’s offices and were used to store medical instruments, dental supplies, or to soak instruments for sterilization. While the white enamel with black trim is iconic, the size of this tray is very unusual: the lid measures 33" long x 4 1/2" wide, while the box measures 32 3/4" long x 4 3/16" wide x 2 1/6" tall (2 1/8" tall with lid on). The black handle measures 4" long.
There are enough remnants of the original label still affixed (see last photo) to reveal it was manufactured by The Asepticon Company and therefore likely dates 1930s-1950s.
