Large Peruvian Andean Ceremonial Offering Phallus
Carved on Meteoric Jiwaya Black Stone
This item was hand-carved by an artisan in Cusco Peru.
The phallus is used in ceremonies in honor of fertility. It represents masculinity and was celebrated as an idol of fertility during the Mochican civilization. This phallus is considered in the Andean communities as an offering to fertility. There is a Peruvian fertility sanctuary, it is located in the city of Chucuito, Puno. It is known as the Templo de Fertilidad (fertility temple), and at the entrance, they have two rocks carved of a male member (phallus), in addition to 80 similar to the interior of the temple. The myth told by the locals said that the temple intended to heal infertility problems, women from the surrounded towns with infertility problems travel to the sanctuary and seat on the stone phallus for blessing.
Jiwaya stone is characterized by its magnetic properties and its heaviness, it has been used since the time of the Incas as a medicinal stone.
